What is the difference between OEM softeware and other types. I need to buy a full working version of Windows XP with service pack 2 as I have been sold a computer with a dodgy version on it that will not update to servcie pack 2 etc. Is is worth buyinh a "full" version or will an OEM version by OK

If you bought second-user equipment then you may have to buy a full retail pack click here.

If your computer's 'new' then get it straight back to the supplier.

The Retail boxed software will allow you to move XP to another machine if you first uninstall from the previous PC.It also covers you for free technical support from Microsoft engineers.

OEM means it can only be used on the PC it is first installed on and there is no free support from Microsoft although you still get all the updates and access to their on-line support such as knowledge base etc.OEM is nearly a third the price of Retail.

OEM versions are supported by the retailer and not Microsoft for warranty purposes.

Latest versions of XP should come with SP2 as a matter of course.

If you contact Microsoft they may agree to help you to obtain a genuine copy at a reduced price
