What is i386 ?

  Baslla321 16:04 28 Sep 2004

What exactly is i386 used for please? It has a lot of files presumably which are on my PC, but what exactly is it used for?

It's the filing cabinet where all the essential Windows files are kept like drivers and such things.

Don't disturb it!

Intel used to make a 386 processor.it came in 2 flavours 386SX and 386DX, the difference is that the DX had a math processor incorporated and it was rumoured that the SX was a disabled DX.Not sure about this I think the 386 made Windows feasable.

I don't think the two are connected.

  cherria 17:30 28 Sep 2004

Sure they are!

The 386 was the first Intel processor that had the power and the memory management functionality to allow Windows to facilitate running multiple applicaitons at once. If I remember correctly, this would have been Windows version 2.

The i386 directory harks back all the way to then and like many things in Intel and Windows although the technology has changed, much of what is underneath has not. The i386 directory just shows that some of the parts of Windows have not been changed along the lines of "if it aint broke, don't fix it"

This is becoming rather nit-picking.

The fact remains that i386 is effectively as I said it was in my first reply. Where the name came from was not the question posed by Baslla321.

as €dstowe has said i386 files are essential files relating to windows and should not be touched

No nit was picked. Further information was simply provided.
