What download speeds do you achieve?

I'm using Talk Talk broadband which is supposed to be a 1Meg connection, but it just doesn't seem that quick at all! I can only compare the download speed to my works pc's which use dial-up and achieve around 20 - 40 Kb/s.
I only tend to download mp3's and I get them at about 40 - 60 Kb/s! Is this normal? What speeds do you guys acheive?

Thanks in advance,

Justin

I have 1 meg in and 128k out. So you were downloading from me the best you would get is 128k.

Plus, if the site is very busy the downloads speeds sometimes drop right off.

it's all based on the upload speed of the source. for example, i'm on 2Mb broadband, but only 256Kb up speed, so you will only get 256Kb off me, depending on how much i am using

where are you downloading from?

on P2P programs, i've had 160Kb/s overall, but i'm sure i can get more out

to test your maximum speed down, go click here

i'v just tun the test, heres my results
Downstream 1819 Kbps (227.4 KB/sec) 1964 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Upstream 240 Kbps (30.0 KB/sec) 259 Kbps (inc. overheads)

baring in mind, i have radio on (via WMP), connected to MSN, i'm connected via a router, and the connection is shared (the other comp is off actually) and i'm with pipex, so the 2Mb is a trial service, i'm sure it will improve when they release the full version

Ahhh, I see! So it all depends on the upload speed of the site I'm connecting to!

I'll run that test when I get home Chezdez! I see your download speed was 227.4 KB/sec with a 2 meg connection, so can I assume that mine should be roughly half that (using a 1meg)?

  Chezdez 16:17 07 Feb 2005

yeah, pretty much, so you'll be looking at about 110-120Kb/s. whilst some on 512Kb will, again, get half, and get 50-70Kb/s (which is right, i was on 512Kb before 2Mb)

Your own download speed is about what I get with a 512 connection.

I can only compare the download speed to my works pc's which use dial-up and achieve around 20 - 40 Kb/s. I think your are not comparing like for like here as dial up is about 4-5 Kb/s

Roy - my work's system uses a mainframe with servers around the world and maintained by a bunch of highly paid IT guys, so I assume that would account for the fast download speeds (for a dial up).
So if you get the same speeds as me with a 512 connection, mine should be almost twice as fast!

I have a 1Mbs connection with BT. From good download sites I get around 117KBs.

Downstream 1847 Kbps (230.9 KB/sec) 1994 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 244 Kbps (30.5 KB/sec) 263 Kbps (inc. overheads)

That's on Freedom2Surf 2Mbp/s. Just tested it via Chezdez's link.

'So if you get the same speeds as me with a 512 connection, mine should be almost twice as fast! '

Yes, exactly my point.

Also see Chezdez's post.

Downstream 64 kbps

Upstream 30.5 kbps with 512k connection. from the ADSL site test.
