What does ALT GR stand for?

I have no idea! please can someone enlighten me?
Similarly on my laptop, i have 3 symbols above the tab key, and to the left of te 1 key,
a back to front ` - when do people use the ` shape?
Another one is ¬ when is this shape ¬ used?
and thirdly ¦ what is this for?

Alt Gr stands for alternate graphics. On my computer Alt Gr and 4 gives ?.

Actually it gives the euro sign but this site changed it to ?

on mine it gives me the euro sign, and pressing other combinations (in word) makes it bold and other such things like that. very strange really!

does anyone know this history to
"alternate graphics"? it sounds an interesting term.
