Website Blocking

  Sirpad 00:46 05 Apr 2006

I'm trying to block certain websites on my PC that I don't want the kids to get into.

From reading other threads here I took the advice of putting the website names into
Tools/ Internet Options / Privacy / Sites

I.E. Restrictedsite dot com

Yes when I try to go into these sites I'm still able to. There is a long list of sites already there and I can't go into them but when I add my own it doesn't seem to work????

Is there another step I should be taking?

have you tried third party software like net nanny or cybersitter these will block out unsuitable sites and many also allow you to create your own blocklist

blocking through IE is not the best

Use a HOSTS file click here

click here is a good one and you can add your own sites to it.

If you know the URLs for the sites in question, adding these to your "Hosts" file will block access to them completely. The Hosts file has no extension, but is a plain text file that can be opened with Notepad. Add the site to block in the form: address_to_block

In XP, the Hosts file is in - C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\Hosts

I tried putting a site into my Hosts file but it doesn't appear to block it.

In my hosts file there was one line localhost

I added one and now it reads localhost rotten dot com

But when I type in rotten dot com i am still allowed access.

Is there another step I should be taking?

Placing it in the Hosts file blocks access for me, I included the www: www dot rotten dot com

Thanks for that...I had left out the www. Works like a charm now.

Interesting site Vog...still reading through it.
