Web link exchange question...

  nick_j007 14:54 10 Feb 2010

(Urgghhh, the ads on this site are getting heavy!)

Would you recommend me exchanging links with a US based company that has a related product in my industry?

I fear that by including overseas web page links it may distill the genuine feel of my site and reduce my credability-with a links page full of far away comapnies. Is this a genuine concern and would the link benefit me?

Thank you.

Well I run a dog behaviour company in the UK and am well respected and do well already from my own SEO.

The company that approached me sells luxury dog cabins and so on but are US based.

I get your point re how it might help my visitors, and I don't suppose it would much to my UK based visitors. I get a fair amount of Stateside traffic, but do not profit from it.

The points already made are the most valid, is the link there for a good purpose and linking for linking's sake is virtually always a waste of effort.

As far as search engines go, they only want to see voluntary links, in place just for editorial reasons. In reality this may still involve reciprocal links but once these stretch beyond a moderate proportion of links, or to a high number, you put yourself at risk.

Algorithmic devaluation is one possibility and any human review which this might trip is not going to have much sympathy for link exchanging, even if this might to an extent be on subject.

So in other words avoid tenuous or less than immediate logical links?
