which windows, Who is your ISP and type of connection.

Have you got the Modem Dial area code set to your region the phone number prefix.

Home page set to the isp.

If its Freeserve/Wanadoo you need to retrieve account, think the same with BT also.

The settings really need to be spot on.

Also Check for Virus infection.
