W98 startup access denied when opening device file

  [DELETED] 21:24 13 Nov 2003

Get this message early in startup :-
"Access was denied when opening a device file that may be needed to run windows.
[Para2 refers to file on a remote disk, which I do not have and is therefore n/a in my case].
If file is on a local disk, the disk may be damaged. Run CHKDSK on disk containing the device
You may need to install the device file again, or
removeitfrom SYSTEM.INI.
Press any key to continue"
When I press a key Windows loads, then runs OK.
This happens each time Windows is started. If I knew device file name, perhaps the matter could be
resolved. Can anyone help please?

There is no details button to press. Message appears in what I would call a DOS screen, and only option is to press any key to continue

Check again to see if it gives a file name

Try Booting in 'BootLog' Mode. (Press F8 before the Bios Info Screen closes). .. Then Select option 2 (Logged)

Then scan the bootlog.txt and see which device is failing, then find out where it is loaded ::

ie: Registry or System/Win.ini
