Voice recording

Just for the interest, and because I purchased a cheapo headphone/boom mic at a fair I have been experimenting with voice messages sent as attachment, instead of boring old typed E-mails.
One of my chums has been dittoing back and forth - just for fun. A 1.5 minute sraight recording could go out at 4.25 mb a zipped version 3.3 meg and a PCM at only 2.640
So what all this is leading to is there a better way of compressing the file- even tighter?

For just voice recording you can lower the bit rate to 32 kbps and the quality should still be OK. I assume that you are using an mp3 format.

These files when recorded and saved as 'Wave'the nativ format for the Win recorder thus the largest size I used Win Zip to compress my out put
My friend mentioned PCM which is smaller, I dont see that on my setup so am waiting for him to come back.
You asked saved as MP3 -would that be even smaller?
How does one save a 'Wave' to MP3 then?
