is this a virus- which?

a neighbour asked my advice about her computer (on which I discovered Norton had not been updated since early June) because IE keeps popping up with the URL of a porn site.
When I investigated I found every time I tried to manually update Norton it just clicked off (subs renewal is 31st July, which is close so tried that too; same click off).
Suspect a virus but can't run Housecall because it gets so far in downloading and then hangs.
Also because her connection (with is very slow - 31.2 this morning. Neighbour doesn't know if this is the norm as she uses the isp so seldom.
All this suggests to me a virus - but I'll have to download Housecall onto disk and take it to her.
Thereafter I'll install AVG.
Reason she hadn't updated Norton, tho I had given her detailed info on how, why, when some months ago was that her son told her she didn't need to as it would update itself! Just one of the reasons I shall install AVG for her; you know where you are with that.

Download Coolwebshredder, save it to disc and load it on her machine. Click the Fix button.

Same with Housecall if you wish.

Sounds like a browser hijacker and shed loads of ad/spyware in addition to any potential virus.
Try avast free virus cleaner click here can be run from a floppy . and Spybot click here

thank you both. I'll do what you suggest.

Next step up from the avast virus cleaner/stinger type freebie is the Microworld anti virus toolkit click here it's much more comprehensive in what it searches for and as such is much bigger, about 4MB so you'd need to run it from a CD if you couldn't download it direct to the infected machine, as with the other downloads, it's a scanner repair program and provides no protection after you've run it and it's done its job.
Another one to try is the a² free malware cleaner click here

If you still can't instal AVG try avast!4 the full anti virus package click here I think it's a better product than AVG 6 anyway.

Please don't post links to porn sites. Did you try Coolwebshredder?

The above was taken from the site policy

Yes, please all, don't. I was not sure what link weas referred to, and it really upset my PC when i found it. wish i hadn't tried. Curiosity killed all my browser windows/the cat. And my PC said 'Your PC is not happy' several times (what is is setup to say when rather upset about somting)

sorry everyone - I'd forgotten it would change to a "click here", as when I typed it in the name was obvious.
