Virus help

A PC of my freind has picked up a virus of some description. HIs Norton AV sofware was out of date!! Now whenever a word doc is opened it gets a popup saying its infected and then gets deleted. On trying to install AVG, I just cannot get it to load, try 3 different versions and the programs just wont run. Is this anything I can run to try and detect/remove the virus?

Insert the norton CD and do a scan using the CD scan option. It wont detect newer viruses but what you have may be found using it.

Up-date any anti-virus or spyware programs that you have ,And run them in safe mode,

Wont let me run Norton or AVG. Seems I am pretty well up the creek!!

Is this to do with a downloaded codec to windows media player?

Dont know but as auto updates is enabled it could be.

Back up everything of importance then and reinstall windows XP. Then get AVG free run it weekly without fail and tell them to stop looking at dirty websites as 99% of viruses come from these places.

and 99% is from my experience. Before someone decides to say something on that.

Try booting up in safe mode, keep tapping the F8 key from the splashscreen. Then try running the AV program.
