Viewing fonts in Ms Excel wsht (Japanese version)

When I view a MS Excel worksheet built on my PC - all is OK.
However, when I view a worksheet that has been mailed to me from Japan, the Column letters A.B.C... and the Row numbers are in a strange font. This has only recently happened - what has gone wrong?. I have renewed all my PCs WinNT font folder with a working version from my Laptop (both using Win2000 - not easy but I think I have done it) but still no difference. The fault is also apparent when viewing some pages on a website built in Japan. Please note I don't think that this is anything to do with the Japanese graphical alphabet. I have also noticed that fonts on a Japanese built pdf file are suspicious but I cannot say for sure. In summary, it seems like my Win2K has lost the ability to select a correct replacement for an unknown font, so it is just guessing!

I have had the same with a workbook sent from China (the country).

I don't know a solution except to copy each sheet and paste into a new workbook.
