Video and sound running too fast

A pc in the office has had a new drive fitted, and since then video files and sound files play extremely fast. This applies to the start up and shut down sounds as well.
I have checked all drivers and can find nothing wrong and they are all up to date.
The PC is running windows 2000
Any ideas?
Thanks

try reinstalling dirext X, it worked for me.

The only thing I can think of offhand which involves or provides the means of altering speed settings in this way is Windows Media Player's View>Enhancements>Player Speed Settings.

But, as you point out, non-related sound effects are also affected.

Tried the directx install but it's still the same!
