very slow shutdown with XP

  User-A679F527-4807-4B58-A7C786402014D14B 14:25 06 Jul 2003

I am running XP, the problem is that at times my system seems to slow up then hang for about 10seconds and when I close down I could make a cup of coffee the time it takes to close.

Any ideas

click here for a great troubleshooting XP shutdown site. It has links for slow shutdowns.

This may not help with the hanging problem, but the quickest way to shut down XP is to modify the registry, if you are happy with this.
Open REGEDIT, click on EDIT, click FIND and type "WaitToKillServiceTimeout". Right click the entry in the right hand pane, select MODIFY and change VALUE DATA to 2000. Click OK. Exit REGEDIT, reboot and your shutdown time will be significantly reduced.

had the same problem as you try this it works very well you'll need to use regedit

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
(dword:00000001 = enabled . . dword:00000000 = disabled)

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]

it could be trying to clean out the pagefile which if you've got a large hdd could take its time

Shows the quality of the posts here.

ClearPageFileAtShutdown will also help security WaitToKillServiceTimeout will also shutdown the problem programs
