Very confused, do I uninstall Aol now?

Apologies for the title, but it about sums it up.

My router is working fine, and so is my wireless connection from my pc, but I've read and heard that you can uninstall the original ISP software and still connect ok. But, as it was Aol software that helped me get going, and not the netgear software, can I still uninstall it.

I'm not stupid, well, I hope not, but I just don't get it?

What do others do?

If you uninstall AOL then you'll lose the email features and only be able to use AOL's web mail under your usual users name. I haven't uninstalled AOL just rarely use its software.
On a reformat and reinstall of xp windows after picking up a nasty malware I could still connect to the net using another browser.
