Verifying Download speeds.

  buckland 15:20 31 May 2007

Could anyone please suggest a couple of websites which would give a free indication of the download speeds I am getting having just up-graded to the Orange LiveBox. I have tried one or two sites as offered on the net but the results tend to conflict. A simple straightforward website would be preferred as I am non-technical and do not want to wear out what little gray cells I have. Many thanks. Buckland.

This is a respected site click here

I use this excellent software click here. The free version does almost everything, but you can't print out your results. If you want that feature, registration is very cheap.

I suggest click here
It is straightforward no download no frills just a practical test of how things are as you press the start button.

(I'm sorry that Internetfrog dosen't seem to be working. his eyes still follow the mouse but he doesn't give the all important download figure any more)

Very many thanks to everyone. I seem to be getting 7816 Kbps which sounds O.K. Have a made a note of your suggested Speed Test Sites and will be doing the occasional check. Cheers and thanks again. Buckland.

Which tester gave the 7816 result if you don't mind me asking?

To Dipso and djbenny. Bearing in mind that I am not technical on this business I did not note the site which gave me that reading but I think it may have been either <broadband> - from namesco and ndo. Repeating the test a few moments ago (about midnight) they have just given me 6563Kbps and 365 Kbps with a second go a minute or so later of 5850 Kbps and 380 Kbps. I then tried which came up with "You 3678 Kbps " and then it said "Results 7816 Kbps Downloaded in 2.125 secs ". If you can interpret this lot for me I should be grateful. Many thanks, Buckland.

A bit more for Dipso and djbenny. I have just done <zd> again at time 00:07 mins. and it gave me 5623Kbps (7816 Kbits in 1.39 secs). I then did <click here> at 00:11 mins which resulted in 3758 Kb/s and 377 Kb/s. What may I assume from this? Does it mean I am getting between 3.5 and 5.5 Mb speed? Best wishes, Buckland.

  Dipso 00:59 02 Jun 2007

Roughly speaking yes, between 3.5 and 5.5 Meg.

"Results 7816 Kbps Downloaded in 2.125 secs ".

So it didn't say your speed was 7816 but that you downloaded that amount of data...I thought it was strange as it's not actually possible to get any higher than 7150kbps..unless you are on Oranges LLU product...but then that would be very unlikely ;)
