USB sockets failure

  bigrad 10:18 26 Jan 2010

Over the space of about five minutes all the USB sockets on my PC stopped working one by one so now none of my peripherals inc modem, printer etc work.

I have checked Device Manager and no errors are reported, I have Run a windows hardware diagnostic - no errors and I have even run Restore without any luck. I have also run a system wide diagnostic, including Registry but no errors reported.

I have run out of places to look now. Can anyone offer some advice? I am running XL. Cheers.

Try this in 'Device Manager'
Right click all USB headings labled 'USB Root Hub'
In the drop down menu click the 'Power Management' tab.
Make sure that the box next to...
'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'

i unchecked the box and rebooted and all seems to be well again. I have had this PC for around 3 years and its never kicked in a power management feature before, which is a bit odd. This problem was not affecting just my USB hub but all the other USB sockets too, so does this feature power manage ALL USB sockets? Many Thnaks for help.

It's a one by one setting.

I personally think they should all be turned off by default and not on as it can be a pain when they go to sleep without any warning.
