USB Connections on `Flat Panel`not working?

I have purchased a new computer and felt that the two USB ports in the`flat panel monitor` would be very accessible and be most useful, however, when I install my removeable`stick`drive`in either of the two ports there is no response or recognition of the connection - what am I doing wrong?

My thanks to all respondents: I had help with the `setup`and was not aware of a dedicated USB cable from computer to panel for ports. Having been alerted by the `forum`I rumaged around in the `left-overs`and found supplied cable. The computer advised me that we were connected. The two ports on the side of the panel are a gift for me as previously I had to go on my knees to locate the front port on my computer; placed on the floor.
Can anyone conversant with Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop confirm that I have now used up all USB ports at the rear of the computer - that being 4?
Thanks again - The Brown Rock
