USB 2.0 Root Hub

  warthog01 11:19 19 Oct 2005

I'm trying to determine whether my Dell Latitude laptop has a 2.0 USB port. In device manager, a "USB 2.0 Root Hub" is listed among the Universal serial bus controllers and the properties indicate a microsoft driver, version 5.0.2195.6717, yet when I plug my MP3 player into the USB socket, I get a message which says it would be a whole lot faster with a 2.0 USB setup.

Am I doing something wrong or is there another driver, etc, I need to acquire before it recognises the 2.0?

I don't know your PC but sometimes older machines have the front ports as USB 1.1 and the rear USB 2.0

Have you tried front and rear?

Both my USB ports are located together on the same panel at the back of the machine, but I haven't tried both ports. I'll give it a shot when I get home. Thanks

If they are working as USB2 you will have in Device Manager "Enhanced USB controller"

For USB2 - in device manager it must say "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller"

If it is not there check in the BIOS that USB2 is enabled. If this option is not present then it does not support USB2

Always check the BIOS for such information.

It doesn't say anything about "enhanced" in device Manager--just the "USB 2.0 Root Hub." I can't check the BIOS until later this evening, but assuming there is no USB 2.0 option there, does this mean a software upgrade of some kind or would I need additional hardware to get 2.0 up & running?

Who might have to manually enable USB 2.0 as follows:

Open Control Panel, System Properties, Device Manager.

Find the UBB Controller

Double Click

Select Driver

Select Update Driver

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 should now be enabled

Bluemeanie--Many thanks! I wish someone had come up with that a couple days ago!!
