Upgrading memory on Dell 640m

  sajeev 20:23 09 Jun 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 640m running XP Professional edition, 32 bit.
My current memory consists of 2 units of 512 each (total 1 G).
Since I will be doing more intensive course work on my laptop this year, I would like to increase the memory. The Dell site says that I can upgrade to 1 Gig at each slot (total of 2 gigs) whereas sites like Crucial say that I can upgrade to 2 Gigs per slot (total of 4 gigs). Of course, I would like to upgrade to the maximum possible but the conflicting advice has me confused. I would not like to purchase the extra RAM and find that it does not work! Please advise.

If XP, you're unlikely to notice any improvement above 2 Gb.
