I understand that I can check if my pc will be suitable for an upgrade. Does anyone know the link please? Thanks

So long as you have the minimum specifications then you should be OK.

To be honest I would forget Windows2000 and go straight to XP.

I'd suggest going with Win2k - I use it along with Linux and find it excellent. It does most of what XP does with fewer costs - XP is pretty heavy going at times if you don't have a reasonable spec. Win2k is a better option for a machine from the Win98 days.

Delete the dos partition and install W2000 A WORD OF WARNING W2000 unlike WXP can never find anything so you will require all your driver disks, you will also have to download Windows media player and msconfig as this software is not on W2000 thats of coarse if you require them.
I find W2000 slower to boot about 1min 50secs
WXP about 1min 10sec on my computer.

You can upgrade Win98SE or you can uninstall it and install Win2000 but (as far as I know) you can not upgrade Win98SE to Win2000. Suggest you check out what the real advantages of it would be cause if your printer or scanner work on Win98SE they might not work on Win2000. But I could be wrong.
