Upgrade problem with Athlon xp2400+

I have decided to upgrade my PC Chips M810L 7.1a board from its XP1600 processor to the XP 2400. The current board is rated at 266mhz (DDR) and gives me 1394 mhz speed from the XP1600+. Memmory is PC 133 SDRAM.

On replacing the CPU with the XP2400, on start up the BIOS routine offers the options of loading setup or load a preset setup. Unfortunately the machine then freezes, therefore I am unable to change the Bios settings. I have tried clearing the CMOS but I am not getting any different messages.

Version 3.0 = Support AMD Athlon 650MHz~1.4GHz / Duron 550~950MHz - 200FSB only (excluding Morgan/Palomino)
Version 5.0 = Support AMD Athlon/Duron 550~1.4 CPUs - 200/266FSB (excluding Morgan/Palomino).
Version 7.0 = Support AMD Athlon XP* 1500+ & 1600+ Palomino (and previous Athlon/Duron CPUs).
Version 7.0a = Support AMD Athlon XP* Palomino and ThoroughBred Type "A"* 2200+ CPUs (and all previous...).

Important notice:
The Thoroughbred "B" (any XP cpu greater than 2200+) cpu is NOT compatible with the M810 (any revision)! It may boot, but you will have problems. You have been warned.
* You will need the latest BIOS to support these newer CPUs
* It is recommended to avoid XP1700+ and XP1800+ of the "Thoroughbred" (0.13 micron type) type on any revision board. The Palomino type is ok.
Important note:
The Duron 1000MHz (and higher) CPU is a Morgan (ie XP+) CPU, and will only work on Version 7.0 motherboards or higher, even though they are less than 1.4GHz.

Some people have discovered that the Duron 1200Mhz (morgan) works with revision 1.6 / 3.0 / 5.0 boards. The risk is yours. The Duron 1000/1100 most likely won't work on these boards.

Many have succeeded in getting faster processors to work than the board officially supports. If you have the latest BIOS, you should definitely try it. Here is a list of CPUS that people have successfully gotten to work. However, they may not work for you...

Thanks for the research - I would have done it my self, but I would still be chasing down the wrong alley. I did checkout the FSB Its rated at 266mhz and I have checked it using Pc Wizard and AIDA32. I have the latest BIOS (08/03)and in theory it should work.

Another thought, hidden away in the downloaded manual, it talks about keeping the page up key depressed during boot up. I have been using the delete key to get into the BIOS. Maybe that makes a difference. I'll try it, but not tonight - I have an early start tomorrow

Just to close the thread, I left things alone for a couple of months and came back to the problem earlier this month (March 2004). The solution was just to persevere with the BIOS at start up. The BIOS had the tendency to trip back to 100mhz instead of 133mhz when recognising the 2400+ cpu. Of course the 266mhz cpu could not work on a 200mhz FSB (100x2) so re-setting the BIOS setting to 133mhz (giving 133x2=266) paved the way to a successfull start-up.

Everything is running smoothly - CPU operating temp 48C, MOBO 32C, but the PSU is showing tendencies to get very hot - sensors saying 75C at times before reducing to 32C, Is there a problem here?

what wattage is the PSU rated at? you should be looking at a minimum of 400w-450w now adays

I have a new q-tec 350w low noise PSU - well below your suggested 400-450w suggestion. Its only recently that I have seen 400w on sale generally. Is it the cpu that puts the strain on the psu, because the peripherals seem to have a low demand?

yes I can do that, but my main suspect at the moment is the fan on the psu - it is supposed to run at a faster speed as the temp increases. As the power consumption goes up the heat rises but the fan is probably slow to kick in - thus the very high temps - which drop rapidly as the fan eventually kicks in.

What temps for a PSU are others getting?
