Upgrade power supply

  Thatslife 23:28 13 Mar 2009

I need to upgrade my power supply to cope with my new graphics card. Thought I'd get away with my 300w but alas no.

The current model is Bestec ATX-300 12Z.

Will any ATX power supply unit do to replace this one?

No reason why not. That's the purpose of the ATX specification.

Just had a look on pcworld at one.

The fan on mine is pointing out of the back next to the power cord. This one appears to have one on the side??

Both are ATX but I'm sceptical about fitting the one shown on the link??

The one you provide the link to will also have an output fan alongside the power cable connection...:-)

I have a very similar PSU which replaced the type you mentioned just before Christmas - the overall cooling ability is far superior.

It's not on the side as such, that fan will be facing downwards when installed in a PC case, drawing hot air up for expulsion by the rear-mounted fan.

This is the model I bought (from Maplins in Aintree) for £25, reduced for a week from £40 at the time; well worth the 30 mile round trip to get one.

It's now back down to £25...:-)

Does exactly what I require and with very low noise levels.

..and Maplins in just round the corner.

I'll pick one up later.
