I don't know about Dell machines, but as a gereral rule for PCs the questions you ask can be answered as follows:

can i fit udma133 120gb7200rpm. hard drive? - yes

can i use my 40gb as slave even though this runs at5200rpm? - yes

do i have to fit the same make of memory in the 2 empty slots? - no

For memory, have a look at crucial.com/uk and tell it the type of machine you have. It will recommend the correct memory for you.

Let me see, I have a Dell dimension 4300 that came with a 60gb [email protected], I added a second HDD as a backup disc, Make: maxtor diamond max plus 120Gb 7200 ultra ATA/133,buffer size 8Mb, complete with ide cable and formatting cd software which I have partitioned off into three drives with BRILLIANT results, NO problems!!!!!!

so my 60GbHDD is the master and the maxtor 120Gb is the slave. REMEMBER to set jumpers to cable select!!!!!

As for the memory, I only have two slots, so I upgraded to 1Gb sdram 2x 512Mb, make: Kingston. It originally came only with 1x128Mb.

I would stick to using the same manufacturer if only for continuity, also DON'T mix sdram and ddram! they won't work.

bretsky using win xp home ed sp1.

Hope this has been of some use..........good luck
