It is possible to do a clean install with Vista upgrade.

i wouldve said no, but according to this page it is possible to install the vista upgrade to a brand new or empty hd click here

the article's a couple of months old, so im not sure if MS would deliberately stop this from working just to get you to buy a full copy, even if you did have proof of owning a full copy of xp.

is it worth running it that way onto a new hard drive or should I just buythe full version?

Don't buy the full version it is perfectly legitimate to do a clean install using the upgrade version and what you end up with is a fully working version of Vista at a much smaller cost.
