Unstable laptop hard drive & new partition s/ware

Hi All,

I have an Acer Travelmate 4150 laptop with windows XP Home.

There is two partions at present C for programmes & D for Data. Hard Drive 60GB

The C partition mostly works but can be unstable and locks me out of windows and when I do a reboot it says it needs to run chk dsk on drives and then verifies space available. This can take between 2 - 8 hours before I can use the machine again. Frustrating!

My plan is to create a new partition E, copy the programmes onto this new partition, rename the logical drives so that the new partition E is referred to instead of C, is the drive that boots each time. Then old C is ignored.

My question is
Which free partition software to use
Which free drive rename software to use

Anything else I would need to do as well.

Thanks for any help.

If your getting stability and error problems with the hard drive, I should think of replacing it sooner rather than later.

Easier said than done, unable to source a new travel mate 4150 internal hard disk.

Unless somebody knows different......

It appears to be a standard 2 1/2" laptop drive, check with your local computer shop, or contact acer.

Can you take the drive out and check that it is a standard laptop drive.
