XP pro
When I create a new document and then try to change the name of it I get an error message.
" If you change a file name extention the file may become unstable" when I do the Windows icon in the box changes to a box with what appear to be red and blue stars.
Please be simple my IT is not very good

All this means is that when you change the name of the file you need to leave the bit after the . the same.

ie when you rename football.doc you must ensure itis now soccer.doc

the .doc bit being the extension

Think I have explained this wrong.
When I create a new document it comes up "New Doc-------" when I try to rename it is when I have the problem

Are you putting dots (.) in the filename? Which program is this happening in?

  toonfireman1 14:20 15 Feb 2004

In windows
When I start a new document in "MY documents"you always get "New doc-----" when I try to change its name is when I get the problem.

I still do not understand what you mean.

You do not start new documents in My Documents you start them in Word !

Once you have started a new document in Word and choose save you then name the document.

At what point in that process are you having the problem?

Sorry for my lack of IT knowledge
Its when I try to rename the document, is because I am try to rename before I have wrote any thing in it?
Thanks for all your help so far

If this is a Word document, make sure you include .doc at the end. e.g.

However, it is much easier to start Word, do your typing and then Save. You will be prompted for a filename and Word will add .doc automatically.
