Unable to safely remove hardware

The icon by the clock for safely removing hardware has dissappeared can someone adviceCannot

If the item in question is connected via USB then it is perfectly safe to simply disconnect it - provided that it is not being 'written to' or 'read from'.

Just realised I have no hardware attached as am upstairs in bedroom so will go down and connect a external drive and see if the icon reappears

If that fails, the same problem happened to me a few years back and I resolved it by setting up a desk top batch file to do the same thing. See solution two here

Don't forget it may be in the "Hidden Icons" part of the taskbar if you can't see it with a USB device attached. If so just drag it down into the notification area and set its properties to "Show icon and notifications".

It is there now it must have been because I had no external hardware attached
