Unable to play music from Library

OS is XP Home edition, supplied with Mesh PC. RealOne Player is unable to play selected music file, and displays an Error Message "Cannot open the device. Another application may be using it".
Windows Media Player (version 8)also won't play : "Cannot play one or more music files etc.." Right-clicking the file says it can't find the file.
I think my sound playing software is disabled, but how can I confirm this?

You do not say what file format the files are.

Have you ensured that the media player either supports or has the file type enabled.

WMP is Tools > Options > File Types

Bremner,
They are mp3 files and played OK in the past, up until "Genetic Host Processes for Win32 encountered a problem and needed to close", which seems to occur as soon as my broadband modem connection LED stops flashing shortly after start-up.
