Unable to access ssl pages

A friend is unable to access secure socket layer pages. I went through the routine given in PC advisor except that I cannot find where to check whether the port 433(SSL) is open. Eventually I decided is was not settings but malware. Norton, Spybot and AdAware found nothing. In safe mode I can access ssl pages. This seemed to confirm my diagnoses re malware.
I stopped almost everything from running at startup in normal mode using msconfig but this did not solve the problem. Norton Internet Security has been disabled by the malware and their is no online protection and no email scanning. Please can anyone identify the malware?
