tv tuner help

i purchased a tv tuner over the internet recently and it claims to receive freeview channels. when i installed it, i received only the four regular channels. does the USB cable actually have to be plugged into a freeview box in order to receive these channels?

did you get a little flimsy ariel with it? or have you plugged it into a known good working ariel?

What is the actual make and model of the TV tuner?

It should be detailed as a Freeview or digital plus analogue model.

Also, unless you are in a particularly good reception area, you will need a decent signal to get the best out of it.

You have, of course, scanned for TV and radio channels after installing the drivers and software?

Is it one of these, or similar? If so, you need to do as Stuartli has said - set-up channels according to the instructions. Also if it is one of these, it will almost certainly need to be connected to your main tv aerial, the little aerial supplied is pretty useless - unless you live next door to the tv transmitter. Another thing, the position of the usb 'stick' is absolutely critical for best reception, even a movement of a few inches here or there can make all the difference. Not withstanding all that, I have the one shown in my link and in my particular case it is Excellent!

yeah i installed the drivers and stuff correctly. and it does work for BBC1 and 2 etc but no freeview channels. is the only way to get these channels to plug it into a rooftop ariel? because my plan was to take my laptop to uni with me i know i wont have a rooftop aeriel there.

You have scanned the analogue and digital (Freeview) channels separately?

  Technotiger 15:30 14 Sep 2007

You have not yet said what 'stick' it is?

  Technotiger 15:32 14 Sep 2007

PS - should have said what 'stick' or PCI Tuner card?

oh sorry, I actually got it from ebay and this is the item

the packet it came in says its a DVBT USB DONGLE

Staurtli, I didnt see a link to scan the channels seperately, but i've print screened so you can see.

Is the only way i'm going to get freeview channels going to have to be through a rooftop aeriel? or should it work with just a regular aeriel?

Hmm, your 'stick' is virtually the same as mine - your software rather different. Judging by your screen-shot it would appear that you have not set any parameters. Universal for instance, should I believe be set to UK (assuming you are in UK) and other things like whether you have cable or aerial TV and whether PAL or NTSC should be set accordingly, depending on your normal TV setup.

What do you mean by a 'regular aerial'?
