What is the best free software to turn some of my pictures into a screensaver please? I have Win XP pro. Or do I already have this facility ??

No, you cannot do this with XP itself.

One software comes to mind, AcdSee or something like that.

Well, I can do it!
Right click on desktop, go to properties and then screensaver, click the drop down box and click my pictures slideshow, which will then find any photos you have.

Sorry, I thought you wanted to have a slideshow!

You can always make up a folder of the particular photos you wish to use and select that as your screen saver. Mine is my favourite place Robin Hoods Bay (sad I know). When I get fed up of that I just select another folder or just let the whole of my photo collection run.
