Trying to upgrade O/S on old Vista PC

I have been given a Compaq Presario desktop running Vista Home Edition. I would like to install a newer O/S, Win10 ideally but 7 or 8.2 would do. The problem I have is that I cannot get it to boot from the DVD drive even though I have set it in BIOS.

Trying to install from within Vista it asks me to put a disk in the drive which I have but it ejects it. Any games or audio disk is seen OK.

Any suggestions please.

How old is the machine - model number?

Not sure of its actual age but the case is hardly marked. SR5249UK and GV329AA-ABU is on the side.

It came with a boxed version of W8.2 32bit & 64Bit with a valid key but was never installed on it.

Trying to install from within Vista

you cannot install an operating system over vista from within vista.

You need to make sure the Disk you have is bootable with the iso on.

Enter BIOS set DVD as first boot device, save and exit (F10) {sometimes worth disabling all other boot devices}

As Fruit Bat /\0/\ says, you need to have a bootable disk in the drive - is yours bootable?

I have a Microsoft printed Retail edition of W8.2 also a Win7 disk that I bought, also printed which has worked before and a Win10 iso that I have used on 2 other PCs. It just wont boot from any of them, the flashing cursor appears at the top left and it would normally ask me to press any key to boot from the CD but it does not, it just keeps flashing until it defaults to Vista.

The Windows 10 iso is presumably an upgrade. That will not work with Vista, because Vista installations were not included in the Microsoft free upgrade offer. although you can install Windows 10 if you buy a copy.

I was intending to install 7 or 8 first and then upgrade to 10.

I am thinking of just wiping the drive and starting from there.
