trying to burn cd in WMP crashes xp pro? help

  sqn08 16:21 02 Feb 2010

My computer started seroiusly crashing when i insert a blank cd to burn a playlist in WMP. This has started to happen after successfully burning cd's before. It makes the whole system crash and re boot.
Think it is the Cd burner unit. drivers or something. but the system re boots and states a error meassge 1000008e, seroius system crash.

In event manager I can see a lot of Error red circles white crosses. leading up tp the event.
some are DCOM and one is system control manager

Its an Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170a

System XP Pro.

How can i tell more about how to solve this?

it could be a corruption in the cd driver - try uninstalling it using device manager then reboot and it should be found and reinstalled. If this does not work you could try sfc /scannow from a command prompt.

I uninstalled the drive via device manager, the system re installed upon reboot.
Now it ejects the new disk upon insertion and refuses to go any further?

to start with I thought it was just the CD DVD RW, but I think it is something to do with wmp11,although I had to get rid of Nero as it seeme to be doing the same, so it must be the burner.

Any other ideas?

You can try an alternative burner to see if Nero is the culprit. There are many free ones - e.g. click here, with more choice at click here. G

Type cmd into run, then type sfc /scannow (note space).

Also it's worth scanning for any malaware using Malwarebytes click here
