Transferring Data

I have a defunct Toshiba A30 laptop with a Hitachi 9.5mm 60gb hd. The hd is perfect and i want to do two things with it. Firstly transfer some of my data to the new laptop, and then format the drive and keep it for storage. As the new laptop has SATA and the old drive is ATA i cant see how to transfer the data. And secondly is there a housing device that the old laptop hd can be fitted into to transfer this data and use it as a backup for the new drive through a usb port or similar. Hope this makes sense.

You could buy something like this click here then drag and drop the files you need from it onto the new computer. This would work fine for data but you may or may not be able to copy across the programs themselves.
