How can I transfer my files and applications from my older PC to my new PC?

I been told I can connect the computers by a cable.

What cable do I need and what programs do I use to transfer?

(1) usb to usb link: a usb datalink cable would be better the easy option usb 1.1 one cost £5.63 click here usb 2.0 one (work with usb 1.1 as well) £9 click here (software will come with cable)

(2) Link parallel port if you do not have usb port in old PC: cable £3.39 click here. Software: Use Direct Cable Connection in win95 to WinXP

(3) Newtrok connection if you have network port (lan or ethernet port) in both machines, you need a Cat 5e crossover cable £0.85 click here. network 2 PC together

The first one is eaiest one.
