I want to transfer old VHS tapes to disk (ie: to CD-R, as VCD format, playable on modern DVD player. I gather I connect the scart from the video to the graphics card and to the sound card. How do I transfer the footage? What software do I need? Will this transfer audio & video? Are there any basic, free software packages that would do the trick??

A couple of things that might help.

Firstly, when you copy the tapes choose the SVCD route if possible - VCD quality is not as good as video! Your CD burning software will probably have the options for VDC or SVCD within the programme - its worth reading up some of the helpfiles within the programme.

For analogue capture I use (the older version) of click here
