Too slow - My Modem/Internet Connection Speeds

  Jeecie 16:01 02 Feb 2003

I've just replaced my faulty old modem with a new one (an "Intel 536EP V.92 Modem" (an internal PCI model AMI-2019 by from for approx. £12 inc. p&p.

It's installed & working (hence this - my new addition to this old thread!)...

But I have a problem re: the new 56K modem's connection speeds... my previous (faulty) modem was V.90 and it used to connect at between 44,000bps and 48,000bps.

Now... the new mdoem will only connect at 28,000bps (or maxes out at 33,000!). I've checked that a) the latest drivers are installed (they are) and b) that under 'Modem Properties' in 'Device Manager' the maximum speed (115200)is selected...
...but I can't seem to get a connection any faster than 33,000bps - which is really affecting download times and also loading new webpages in IE is at a snail's pace...

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Also check that the packet size is set to "small" (go to Network in Control Panel, Configuration, DialUp Adapter, Properties, Advanced and then highlight DialUp Adapter before selecting "small" in the drop down menu on the right).

There's also the 1.4 DialUp Networking update from the DUN webpage at Microsoft's website; well worth downloading this small file if it is not already installed.

Stuartli I've checked the links you posted unforunately they've not turned-up anything I can seem to use (might just be that I'm too dumb to make sense of them though!). I've downloaded to DUN update and will give that ago...

Will let you all know how I get on :)

Have you got W2 in the extra settings box if not put it in. You could also try the speed click here

Just checked on mine and got 5530cps

Stuartli - whats the significance of setting the Packet Size to Small, rather than the default of Automatic which mine is currently set too. Have you noticed increased speed, if so how much. Thanks David

Whats the significance of DUN1.4 from MS, does MS say this gives increased speed? Thanks David

If you have a BT line, call the relevant dept and ask about extra gain being added to your line. This increases speed. If you are with a different telco let me know and I will give you more suggestions.

I have built new XP system and bought new modem the Intel and also changed it for TrustV92 had the same slow connection. Put in my old modem HCF56K and have the speed 48 or49.2K. I would like an answer if you find one as I want a voice modem and my old one will not use voice while running on XP drivers. I will watch this thread Hope I am not imposing.
