Toner Life on Samsung Printer

Hi - I have a Samsung ML3471ND, bought in April. I had no problems with the installed cart, it did over 4000 pages, which I thought was fine. However, I installed a 10,000 page high capacity cart in June, expecting it to last for 5 months, and it is now showing only 9% left, with only 3700 pages printed. It's as though the printer software thinks I am only using a normal-capacity cart, rather than the big one. Does anybody know of this problem? Will it actually stop printing after only about 4000 pages? Is there some setting I should know about to 'tell' the printer it's got a high capacity cart installed? I would really appreciate any help or advice - I replaced a supplies-hungry HP printer, and if this is going to happen I'm going to find I just can't afford to run the printer!! I only ever use Samsung supplies, not generic, by the way. hope!!
