Try this:

Is there anything specific that's slow about Vista for you? Is it the operating system or applications that are slow for you?

What spec laptop do you have and what edition of Vista (e.g. Home premium, home basic, Ultimate, 32 bit or 64 bit)?

is a shortage of RAM. Vista will continue to crawl along in 512Mb, no matter what else you try to do to speed it up.

If you can, you should upgrade the RAM to at least 1Gb - or more if the laptop and your budget can take it. Otherwise you would really be much better off running Windows XP, and even that will be fairly slow in 512Mb of RAM.
