thunderbird trouble

  ernieernie 11:54 13 Jan 2010

I have tried to email from thunderbird but it gets bounced with the following message.
Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server The server does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Untick 'Use name and password' for that server or contact your service provider.
I can't find where the untick box referred to is situated.
I have just gone into Windows 7 and can't understand why Microsoft has made it so difficult to email.

In Thunderbird go to Tools - Account Settings. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) in left pane - then highlight account name in right pane and click Edit. Untick box beside Use secure authentication and click OK.

Thanks a million, Sea Urchin. It worked a treat.
It's so easy when you know how. I just wish that error messages could be a bit more helpful. The writers don't seem to think that people in trouble need a bit of guidance too.

Great to know that worked OK - thanks for the feedback.
