Things to consider when changing Mobo + CPU

  Grady 18:46 21 Dec 2004

What sort of things do I need to consider when looking change the motherboard and processor in my computer?
My mate is upgrading his PC and therefore he has an MSI Ultra2 mobo + a 1.67Ghz AMD athlon processor going free.
Mine is currently a MSi mobo + 350Mhz PII processor.

you may also need new RAM as well, there is nothing else, but make sure you backup important stuff before you do anything

Thanks TomJerry.
It won't be an issue that its an AMD rather than Pentium?

1) your existing RAM is suitable for the new mobo.

2) if your existing mobo has onboard graphics and the new one doesn't, you will also need a graphics card.

3) You'll probably need to install your OS from scratch, making sure you have mobo drivers etc.

Good luck.

You will need to update the motherboard drivers in your version of windows. Get the disk of your mate.

Boot in safe mode, uninstall the old drivers and reinstall the new ones.
