text to speech

Is there a program out there that sounds like a real person speaking?

I got a free Easy Office Suite on the CD with Computer Shopper October 2001 issue.

The text to speech software works well enough. You have a choice of male or female American voices.

Does it sound like human voices?

Don't know what you expect, but it didn't sound like robots. Not good enough to teach languages to foreign students, but perfectly audible.

click here for Readplease, it's not bad, you get a choice of voices and can adjust the read speed, but they do sound rather American and some of the pronunciations on "English" words is a hoot.

Hi Tenor, I have also used Readplease for a while now and find it can cope with most things.

I've never heard a truly realistic voice on text to speech.

OK, the individual words on their own may sound perfectly acceptable but when strung together to try and make something sound meaningful it is then that they become "computer speak". This is due to the lack on intonation in each word thus making the speech flat and lifeless. It will need an awful lot more technology before a computer can be made to even "understand" what it is saying and then transfer that into putting tone into the words. Yes, it can do it now to a small extent by comparing surrounding words and then putting the problem word into context but this is with very few word examples. Considering that even the most ordinary human speech has a vocabulary of many thousands of words, with the passive vocabulary much bigger, it will be some time before a computer is able to cope with all this. The speed is probably already there, just the memory lacking.

It can be quite amusing putting long scientific words (or better foreign words) into one of these text to speech engines and hearing what it makes of it. But then, occasionally, what you think is going to be a total disaster comes out correct.
