System restore

I have accidentally deleted some windows files and I dont know which ones. As a result I cannot even open the System restore function, the window opens but stays empty. Emails also cannot be deleted. In the setup wizards for various programs, clicking on the next box does nothing, the window does not change. Does anyone have any idea what has happened and how to correct it?

Version of Windows? me xp?

If xp, open a command prompt (Start/programs/accessories) and type in sfc /scannow and insert your xp cd as required.

Note the space in between sfc and /scannow.

Thanks Mike, I am new to this. It wants to go to the microsoft site to update the files, should it not do so from the XP disc? The second option is to skip this and continue installing windows, does this mean a complete reinstall of windows xp and does it mean that I loose all my data, or does it mean it will install only the missing files?

What my procedure does is to replace critical windows files with the original versions from the xp disk. I would reccomend doing this before going for a reinstall. I don't think going to windows update will solve the issue.

Using the sfc procedure should not harm your data, but I would backup first.

Have just re-read your last post, what it's trying to do is check to see if any files on your cd are not the latest. I had to do this recently and I updated via win update after I had got everything running just from the cd.

Thanks, Mike. I think the problem was a hard disk fault. My hard disk failed, I got a SMART warning. The disk has been changed, Windows reinstalled and now back to normal.
Thanks for your help.

Glad to hear you've solved it.
