"The system has recovered from a serious error"

  astral traveller 18:36 14 Aug 2003

I'm using XP home and every time I log on I get the above message. The thing is I am not aware of any problem occurring before I have switched off or before power savings kick in - no crashes or anything. I don't get the messasge logging on to other profiles. The message code is gobbledegook to me I'm afraid. Anyone know what might be happening.

It could be any number of things.

Next time that it happens get down the details of the error message as this will give forum members enough info, hopefully, to help solve the problem.

Right-click My Computer, choose Manage, click on System Tools > Event Viewer, and check out System and Application logs - all errors are logged there. Serious ones have a red circle with a diagonal cross through them.

Double-click an error to get more detailed information. Report back with full details if you require further help.

Are you up to date with everything in Windows Update?
I downloaded a fix from there to solve that problem on this machine.

The True Vector Engine refers to Zone Alarm.

I suggest you do a full manual uninstall of ZoneAlarm, as described at click here

If the problems disappear, then download the free version of Sygate firewall from sygate.com

Note that it is possible that the zone alarm problem is a symptom, and not the primary cause - but you can not be sure until you uninstall it.

will give it a try tommorrow and post back over the weekend if still having problems.

  astral traveller 10:14 17 Aug 2003

the same error message on start up.
The actual error report (with the error) says that it will include the following lines: "C:\WINDOWS\minidump\mini08603-060\mp
C:\Documents and settings\pete\local settings\temp\wer1.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml - I have looked and the wer1.tmp folder doesn't exist and the sysdata.xml file isn't anywhere on the hard drive.
Any ideas?

ZA Pro caused many unexplained crashes in XP Home on my puter.I removed it(went back to version three)and my errors disappeared, only the damage caused by ZA eventually led to a re-install of XP.I ran CHKDSK but although it fixed numerous errors, the OS still crashed shortly after boot.
