When i start my computer I receive an error message saying the c:\windows\system32\config\system file is unreadable or corrupted. It suggestes I boot from the XP Pro CD and attempt a recover with Recovery Console. When i do this i can not find the windows directory or the system file on a or c drive,in fact i can not view the files as it just tells me it can not expand directory on c.Any help and sugestions whould be very welcome. I would prefer not to re install windows i at all poss.
thanks jc

does the system allow you to log in as administrator?

  fymlor 10:45 19 May 2006

the only thing i can think of what could be happening is that i might not be using the original windows disk to get the recovery console

i do not even get an option for admin sign on.

sounds mosts likely, no file access without admin status

  fymlor 10:54 19 May 2006

how does the windows xp disk give you admin status?
that does confuse me.:)
is there a way around this?

At the c:\windows propmt in recovery consul just type

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

it should ask if you want to overwrite answer yes

type exit to reboot.

once in windows do a system restore or you will need to install all the updates.

it just comes up with access is denied
