my computer's resolution is 640 by 480. i want to make it 1024 by 768, like it was before i bought my new hard drive. when ever i move the slider to 1024 by 768, i restart my computer and it is back on 640 by 480.

new hard drive? you've reinstalled windows?
you need to install the video card drivers, the adaptor is set to standard vga which can only run at low res and colours.

Depending upon your OS, the process will be slightly differnt, but you need to right click 'My computer' and select properties. Now go into Device Manager and select your display adaptor. This should tell you what you video card is.
