svchost.exe worries, please can anyone help?

I have 5 svchost.exe processes running, one which consumes a lot of open connectoions when I look at open connections in Detailed statistics in Norton Firewall, I am running on a small home network, this is not a server although does share a folder.

When I close svchost.exe NETWORK SERVICE, norton shows 27 open network connections rather than 31.

The network works without it and the PC seams to operate slightly faster.

I am spyware, Ad-aware, Dialler, Hacker and Virus free so what is svchost.exe actually doing?

The stats in norton show it is not contacting with the outside, but when I set norton to Automatic for Win32 host processes then on startup it asks Win32 host processes wants to access the internet, Allow or Block. How come no Auto?

Thanks.

Just ignore it, its normal to have more than one svchost.exe process running.

Although not on a network i have 5 svchost.exe processes running.

I really do not know.

Thanks, powerless, it had me wondering if I was infected with a trojan that nothing detects.
