sufficient memory?

  [DELETED] 21:37 10 Feb 2006

I have just bought my son a new PC (Emachine)has 2.9 AMd processor 80g HD and lots of other goodies, what concerns me is memory is only 256, OS is XP, want to set it up tommorow any advice please.

the opinion is that 256mb is a bare minimum to run xp. i seen a girls laptop last night with that amount and it was abysmal. if you can i would look to have at least 512 to make it run smoother. other than that make a coffee and wait for your applications to open

Yes, it will run but slowly.

The last thing I want (or rather he does) is for it to be slow, what would be the optimum without going OTT.

512MB is good. 1024 is better but not a lot. Note: adding too much can actually slow things down (apparently, not noticed this myself).

minimum 512mb, optimum 1gb.

Ray just beaware that if you upgrade the ram yourself, you may breach your warranty...Im guessing you have bought this system from Pc world or dixons maybe currys ?
I have an Emac myself, the system will run ok when new,but after you load the software of various will see a dramatic decrease in response to the applications.Yes i agree with the others, you need more ram..But let the shop upgrade for you and ask for it to be included in the warranty.
Good luck

I run on 2gb and the machine zooms along, 2gb is a bit excessive and overkill for my everyday routine on the computer, but when I do video it pays to have it.

I wouldn't run on less than 1gb. Latest games will utilize a hell of a bit of RAM. I was playing FEAR and it was using over 900mb of RAM.
