storing music on external hard drive

I would like to use my external hard drive to store my music collection on, so that it can be played on either my desktop or laptop, and be played by different players.

What is the best way of doing this, with out the expensive of buying software. Or is there a very reasonable piece of software that will do the job.

Just store as MP3 in folders for easy access
eg artist\album name\track name

most payers winows media, Musicmatch . itune have a search facility just poit it to the extranal drive.

Thanks for that fruit bat /\o/\, thought so. I've already plonk my music folder on there, now it's a long hog of transfering contents from verious different folders.
